Contact Lens Products
Setting out to buy discount contact lens products for the first time can be an especially trying experience. There are so many types to choose from, it can be difficult to know which type is right for you. The question on the minds of most first-time buyers is "Where do I begin?" The answer to this question can be found below.
Getting a Prescription
Before going any further, you must first visit an eye care professional to obtain a valid contact lens prescription. This even applies if you are only looking for novelty or costume lenses to change your eye color. Not everyone is eligible to wear contacts so this step is essential in the purchasing process prior to placing your first discount contact lens orders.
Contact Lenses 101
Contact lenses are thin, curved, plastic disks designed to correct vision by altering the way light enters the eye by changing the curvature of the cornea, the clear front covering the eye.
Surface tension allows them to cling to the film of tears that cover the cornea. When used properly, they are a safe, effective way to correct several refractive errors, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia (inability to clearly change focus from near to distant objects), and astigmatism (irregular shape of the cornea causing blurred vision). The most common types of contact lenses include:
Spherical and Aspherical Contact Lenses
The most common types of visual problems, myopia and hyperopia, are corrected using spherical lenses. They have the same corrective power throughout the surface of the lens, helping the eye to focus and maintaining clear vision. Aspherical lenses also have only one power, but they are of a higher quality for patients with a slight astigmatism or those starting to develop presbyopia.
Toric Contact Lenses
These contact lenses are for people with astigmatism and either myopia or hyperopia. The lenses have more than one power, as well as an anchoring device to keep them from rotating on the eye.
Bifocal or Multifocal Contact Lenses
Similar to bifocal glasses, these contacts have more than one power in them -- the power at the top of the lens could be for distance, and the one for near vision is at the bottom of the lens. Multifocal contact lenses, sometimes called "progressives", also offer more than more power, but the transition between the two is more gradual.
