Disposable Contact Lenses

Offering a healthier, more convenient alternative in contact lens wear, disposable contact lenses are now the most common type of contact lenses.

Disposable contacts are designed to be worn for a specific amount of time after which they are thrown away and replaced with a new pair. These lenses are convenient and may reduce the chance of infection or deposit formation.

As technological advancements have brought down the production costs of contact lenses, the replacement of lenses on a daily or weekly basis has become quite affordable, making them the first choice of many contact lens wearers.

Terminology
Before going any further, if it necessary to understand the language of disposable contact lenses. Disposable contacts can be worn for up to two weeks before they are thrown out. Frequent replacement contacts are replaced on a monthly or quarterly basis. However, the word "disposable" usually refers to both disposable and frequent replacement lenses. Conventional or traditional contact lenses can be worn for six months or more without replacement.

The term replacement schedule pertains to how frequently the contacts are thrown out and replaced with a fresh pair, i.e., are they conventional (six months, plus), frequent replacement (monthly), or disposable (two weeks or less).

Wearing schedule refers to how frequently the contacts are removed from your eyes. If they are daily wear lenses, they are removed every night, but if they are extended wear, you sleep with them in your eyes.

Types
While there are several types of disposable contact lenses available with different replacement schedules, only a complete examination by an eye care professional will ultimately determine which type are best for your eyes — every eye is different physiologically and every prescription is unique. If the choice is yours, it will most likely depend on how much time you prefer to spend on maintenance, and how much money you want to spend on your lenses.

If you are someone who wants to completely avoid cleaning and disinfecting your lenses, the easiest and healthiest choice of disposable contact lenses for you are daily disposables. (Note: Extended wear contacts are another option if you want do away with lens care.) Daily disposables are thrown out at the end of each day and replaced by a fresh new pair. This is the healthiest option as there is no daily buildup, almost eliminating the risk of infection. It is also the most convenient as no cleaners are needed and no time is spent on lens care. And the more frequently your lenses are replaced, the more comfortable they will be in your eyes.

Disposable contact lenses that can be worn for two weeks or less and then discarded are another healthy and convenient choice. They require proper cleaning and storage, but the decreased risk of calcium and protein buildup, found naturally in tears, is beneficial to the health and comfort of your eyes.

Frequent replacement lenses require more care than the two types mentioned above, but the risk level of infection is still lower than traditional lenses.

Cost
Depending on how complicated your prescription is, the cost of a proper fitting can vary. But the increased cost of choosing disposable contact lenses over traditional lenses is very little compared to the benefits of convenience and good ocular health. The extra cost is also counterbalanced by the reduced need for lens cleaning and storage products.

Options
Disposable contact lenses are also available for people who want color contact lenses, bifocal or multifocal contact lenses, and contacts that correct astigmatism, called toric lenses. So the opportunity to take advantage of the health benefits and convenience of disposable contact lenses is available to almost all contact lens wearers.
